Culture + Story

a journey through taste

In 1977, the area south of Manhattan’s Houston Street was still largely an industrial district, filled with warehouses and small manufacturing companies rather than the vibrant neighborhood it would later become. In the middle of this setting, at 121 Prince Street near the corner of Greene, two men were preparing to open something entirely different.

a vision for a food experience

Georgio DeLuca, a former school teacher turned cheese merchant, and Joel Dean, a business manager at Simon & Schuster, shared a vision of creating a space dedicated to food, not just for shopping, but as an experience. They wanted to build a place that celebrated cooking, eating, and the simple pleasures of good ingredients.
